Kenalog injection what is it used for?
Kenalog’s active ingredient, Triamcinolone is a steroid medicine that is used to treat many different types of inflammatory conditions, including severe allergic reactions, skin disorders, severe colitis, inflammation of the joints or tendons, blood cell disorders, inflammatory eye disorders, lung disorders, and problems caused by low adrenal gland hormones. Kenalog injection is also used to treat certain skin disorders such as cystic acne, hypertrophic scars and alopecia.
Kenalog injection for acne
Kenalog is a medication that has strong anti-inflammatory properties. When this is injected into the acne, it automatically reduces the redness and inflammation and flattens the lesion, so the skin begins to heal instantly. Unlike topical steroids, these injections reduce the chance of thinning the skin surface and remedy the issue faster.
During the treatment, the cyst will be cleaned before injections are administered through a very fine needle so there is minimal discomfort during treatment. Patients may ask for a topical numbing cream to ensure optimal comfort. The session takes a few minutes and there is no downtime. Patients can receive these injections every 4-8 weeks if needed.
Kenalog injection for scars
Keloids and hypertrophic scars can be treated with Kenalog Scar Treatment (triamcinolone acetonide), a specially formulated anti-inflammatory injection that reduces inflammation of raised scars. The medication causes the scar to shrink and flatten and, in some cases, even lightens darker scar tissue.
Kenalog injections are a popular non-surgical option and often the first-line option for treating these scars. The treatment may significantly improve raised scars, reducing their size, swelling, itching, redness and tenderness.
Kenalog injections for scar treatment are generally given in a series, usually several weeks apart, depending on the patient and the size and type of the scar. The total number of injections required will be determined on a case-by-case basis by your treatment provider.
How long does it take for kenalog injection to work on?
You will notice improvements of the scar several weeks or longer after the first injection, although some results might be seen within a few days. The speed at which results are realized will differ from patient to patient depending on the scar. In addition, newer raised scars tend to be more receptive than older scars.
Kenalog for alopecia
Alopecia Areata is considered an autoimmune disease that affects 1% of the population. It usually presents with an oval patch or multiple confluent patches of asymptomatic nonscarring alopecia. Twenty percent of cases may proceed to alopecia totalis, affecting the entire scalp. One percent may go on to alopecia totalis, affecting all body hairs, including eyebrows and eyelashes. The disease frequently resolves spontaneously within 1 year. Recurrences, however, are common. Severe disease has less of a tendency to resolve on its own, especially in children or atopic individuals. Frequently, fingernails may show dystrophic changes such as pitting, ridging, and thinning of the nail plate.
Treatment depends on the extent of the disease, and the age of the patient. For small patchy disease, intralesional corticosteroid is the treatment of choice. Kenalog suspension 5 mg per mL is injected with a 30-guage needle directly into the patches with tiny injections of 0.1 mL each spread over affected areas. The total amount should not exceed 10 mg of triamcinolone acetonide per visit. Injections are repeated every 4 to 6 weeks. Other options include topical minoxidil, anthralin, and steroid.
