What to expect after fat grafting?
The main problem after fat injection are swelling, bruising, redness at injection site and some edema which may last up to 2-3 weeks to resolve. During 48 hours after fat grafting it is recommended to cool down the face and sleep in semi sitting position for fastest recovery and stay away from blood thinning drugs such as omega 3, ibuprofen for a few weeks.
How long does fat transfer last?
It is very unpredictable and vary from patient to patient, however ,recent studies showed that 30-40% of the fat would last forever. The technique play an important role in fat survival, For example, injecting in deep subcutaneous tissues within several layers will help better oxygenation and more blood supply witch last longer. Small harvesting cannula, centrifuging the fat prior to injection to separate out the liquid anesthetic are techniques that may help.
What are side effects of fat transfer?
Fat transfer side effects are few, rare, and minimal. Soreness and swelling are most experienced complications. Infection presenting may affect graft survival. Viral infections or herpes infection have also been reported at the site of cannula entry.
Fat embolism, particularly if injected with sharp needle.Blindness may result as a direct consequence of needle puncture and intracapsular trauma or pressure related retinal artery thrombosis.Cyst formation is more common when a large amount of fat is transferred.Skin necrosis and sinus formation may result from overfilling or over augmentation of the desired site.Compression atrophy may result from over augmentation with associated avascular necrosis due to excessive pressure on vasculature which can result in arterial or venous thrombosis.

Haematoma or seroma formation may occur more commonly if blunt cannulae are not used and when the patient is on other anticoagulant medication or supplements providing an anticoagulant effect.
