what is microneedling?

Microneedling devices include rollers with wheels of needles and pens with a cluster of needles at the tip. The slight injury they cause stimulates the growth of collagen, the scaffolding under the skin, which then improves the appearance of some scars and wrinkles. The technique works great for sunken areas on the skin caused by acne, but not for deep, narrow “ice pick” scars
Micro Needling creates visible results with no downtime.

The skin needling treatment helps reduce ageing lines, scars, stretch marks and skin concerns.
This type of skin treatment stimulates the skin to regenerate and repair itself naturally and safely, creating visible results with minimal downtime. Micro Needling can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines, scars, stretch marks and other skin concerns.

Collagen Induction Therapy

The idea behind Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) is similar to that of many other non-surgical skin-tightening procedures in that it aims to create a controlled injury underneath the skin’s surface, thereby inducing the body to respond through the formation of new tissue layers of elastin – and collagen fibres (neo-collagenesis) as well as new capillaries for an improved blood supply (neo-angiogenesis) in the treated area.

The skin plumps and thickens in response to this stimulus, ultimately reducing the appearance of scars, and fine lines and other skin texture changes. In addition to CIT, the channels made from the micro-needles allow topical gels and creams to be absorbed more effectively through the top layer of skin.

What are the effects of microneedling on the skin

Micro needling improves the skin by improving thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. This in return improves skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It can also have a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation. Disfiguring scars, especially acne scars, can many times also be improved. New collagen fibres elevate any depressed scar tissue. An improved blood supply (neo-angiogenesis) into the previous fibrotic scar tissue also harmonises and blends the pigmentation with the periphery skin.

How does microneedling compare with other skin treatments?

As already mentioned, medical micro needling is a non-ablative treatment i.e does not remove the top layer of skin. Alternatives are the ablative skin treatments such as lasers, chemical peels and derm abrasions which do remove the top layer of skin and subsequently have more down time and associated side effects and possible risks.

However, in situations where the top layer of skin is more obviously affected with more severe changes in colour, wrinkles and quality of skin, then ablative treatments with subcision may be indicated and preferred over non ablative skin treatments.

What areas of the body and face can I do?

Unlike ablative procedures which are mainly used for facial skin, the Medical Micro needling can be used on all skin parts of the body (neck, décolleté, arms, leg) and face

How Is Dermapen Different From Dermal Needling Rollers?

Automated micro-needling devices move in a vertical direction for better precision when treating the skin. Unlike Automated Micro-needling the roller does not create a precise vertical action.

The lack of precision can contribute to greater discomfort and inconsistent effects to the skin.

How Is Microneedling Different From Laser?

Unlike lasers, Dermapen breaks up pigment mechanically and stimulates the collagen formation without heat. Removing heat from the equation makes for a safer, more comfortable treatment with a very low complication rate.

No heat also equals less downtime! Most Eclipse Dermapen patients are red for 24 hours or less. That advantage means you can get the procedure performed on a Friday and be back to normal for work on Monday.

How Is The Procedure Done?

A sterile cartridge containing 12 tiny micro-points is attached to the Dermapen. Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate treatment setting based on your unique needs.

Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding until the entire treatment area has been covered. This process results in thousands of superficial microscopic channels throughout the entire treatment area.

For melasma treatment using tranexamic acid serum along with microneedling would resolve hyperpigmentation efficiently.

Hi, I had a rf microneedling procedure done last month. I have a darker skin type with acne scars. Now I’m dealing with severe pigmentation on my cheeks. What can I do to treat this? Will it go away?

    1. Thank you Sara5000 for your question
Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation(PIH) can resolve if treated appropriately.I found over years that PIH resolve better under tretinoin 0,025% and Floucinolone for at least 2 months as it increases the cell turnover as well as decrease inflammation.
Hydroquinone might help in white skin not darker skin types, because it has a high chance of irritation and increase the PIH after stopping it.
Having said that, any aggressive treatment such as deep peel, laser resurfacing , scrub ,…may induce traumatization hence more pigmentation.
Moreover, sun protectoin, Moisturizer and topical Tranexamic acid might be helpful.
I suggest a formal consultation with an expert in lasers and peels.
      Best of luck

  2. Hello,How long should I wait between facial fat transfer & microneedling? Thanks

    1. Thank you Jess-400 for your question
In my practice, I routinely perform Micro needling with Fat grafting in the same session with Nanofat needling Protocol to get the best results for facial volumization as well as improving skin texture and elasticity.
However, grafted fat is very sensitive to mechnical pressure, so I perform Needling just before the Fat grafting to maximize graft take.
Having said that, I recommend the next Micro needling session 4 weeks later to wait enough time for the grafted fat to settle and do not manipulate it too much.
      Best wishes

In my opinion, Micro needling aftercare is critical for best results. Moisturizing cream as well as repairing cream and using a good brand physical sunscreen reduce the risk of pigmentation significantly.
Moreover, I find that application of a corticosteroid cream for several days after the procedure especially in darker skin tone reduce the risk of
      post inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
Having said that, hydroquinone and vitC cream may reduce pigmentation. However I would suggest to consulting with your Doctor as soon as possible.
      Best of luck

  4. Hi, I’ve got scars due to pimples but not too much. I want permanent solution to get rid of the scars. Is microneedling a permanent solution? If not, what are treatments are available without any side effects?

    1. Thank you for your question
Diminishing acne scarring generally takes a combination of procedures rather than just one.

Micro needling can be a permanent solution if
2.5 mm depth with multiple passes performed. They cause the skin to exfoliate and produce fresh new skin cells.
However, deep atrophic scars need combination approach with Subcision. I find that combination treatment have greatest outcome with permanent results.
      Beast of luck

  5. Hi,I got some filler injections in my acne scars a few days ago. How long before I can start to do microneedling? Thank you

    1. Thank you for your question.
Ideally it’s wise to postpone superficial filler injections after complete Microneedling courses.
However,in your situation waiting at least two weeks after filler injections is mandatory.

  6. Hi I’m reading very conflicting things about Microneedling and whether it cause inflammation or reduce it. I had Microneedling to almost 2 weeks ago and am about to have next session, but am now worried it might be too soon as there might still be some inflammation. I’m also not sure whether the collagen is broken down by any of these treatments, so if it’s better to wait until a full month has passed in order for the collagen to rebuild.

    1. This is a good question
Microneedling and other skin resurfacing procedures such as laser, Peeling, Dermabrasion… are controlled inflammation, in order to promote fibroblasts and collagen production.
However, interval between these procedures is critical for healing process, because controlled inflammation may shift to uncontrolled inflammation with serious cosequences.
Having said that, if your treatment was deep, two weeks is not appropriate time for next session. In my opinion, 4 weeks interval is ok for your next treatment.
      Best wishes
